Advice:

we have contract burners operating on site, they cut all types of metal, this is conducted outdoors at all times, weather permitting. Operatives have all the necessary PPE and medical checks, however, the fumes are being blowen across site and into one of our buildings, what additional measures should I be looking into. Currently monitoring the amberant air and dust in this building.

Hi Roy

Whilst I doubt that fumes will be entering the building in quantities that might be likely to exceed any occupational exposure limits, you won't know until you have done some monitoring and even that would need to be illustrative of the mix of materials being cut.

So, as example, even cutting steel could emit e.g. chromium or manganese compounds within the fumes, alongside ferrous and ferric oxides (Iron can produce different compounds of oxidisation).

....and you probably realise that simply not exceeding any occupational exposure limit might not be doing all that is reasonably practicable.

But your monitoring results might point to whether there is any significant risk to those inside the building, rather than a "nuisance".

I could point you to HSE Guidance Note EH54 which dealt with the assessment of such fumes but it is long since out of print and to be honest current HSE guidance is not particularly helpful when it comes to the health risks of such operations - other than in relation to those doing the work.

Good luck, Peter
