Hi, Does anyone have experience or purchased spills kits dedicated to spillages of 10% formalin? We have the standard multi purpose spill kits (pillows, booms, absorbent pads) which has been sufficient, but we now have 5L containers of 10% formalin on a site and wanted to make sure the emergency procedures were correct. Thanks,

The issue with a formalin spill is the formaldehyde gas that it gives off. So any spill procedure will require that people have the correct PPE including suitable RPE. Rather than try to mop it or collect it in a sump/bund I would try to suck up and get it back into a container asap. Where is this going to happen? Outdoors it isn’t to bad but indoors with poor ventilation I would try to get rid of as much as possible as quickly as possible.

Thanks for the reply. RPE (suitable for the indiviudal, correct filters and face fit tested), gloves safety goggles would all form part of the spill procedure.
It would be in a lab environment, that it quiet spacious with good air flow - but not forced air changes as per some of our other labs.

Why 5 litres in a lab environment? I have restricted ours to 2.5 litre Winchesters.

It's a new site and the container size is historic, so potentially is something we can look at changing going forward. Thanks,
