Hi all, I am planning a company safety day and would like to have a guest speaker take part to deliver a presentation. The event will be a full day and so we want to include an approx' 2 hour slot for an external speaker who is an expert in their subject, as we think this will enhance the overall experience for our teams. The subject topic is flexible so could be anything 'safety' related to our activities which would include the design, supervision and management of national & international construction projects. It would be great to hear from anyone with experience in this type of thing or recommendations for any particular guest speakers. Also interested to hear any ideas for type of things I could include in the day e.g. quiz or workshops etc that might help to make the day a success. All ideas welcome. Thanks.

Highly recommended, (I've seen both this guy, and Jason Anker who have about the same message, but this guy held my attention better).

There are the obvious (and still very good) Ken Woordward, Jason Anker etc style speaker. These type of presentations either have a big effect on people or no effect at all (it'll never happen to me) but in my experience in either case the effect is generally short lived. From a person perspective, one of the most inovative and thought provoking speakers was a TV/Film armourer. He went over military personal armour from the Greeks/Romans/Medieval/modern (using real/prop armour), discussing the protection levels and limitations and how tactics could be more effective than personal armour. This led to how workplace PPE should/could be viewed in the same context. Very different from the norm and got people (especially managers/supervisors) thinking about how working practices could be better and cheaper then PPE; but where PPE was needed it was critical to use PPE that was fit for the hazard and wearable for the user. The presenter was Hamish MacLeod (www.hamishmacleod.uk) and his company is History in the Making (www.history-making.com). I think its about 10 years since i first listen to Jason Anker speak about his accident - very powerful stuff. Since then he has put together a whole team of people who can speak about incidents, including his daughter who speaks about the effect Jasons accident had on her life. Check out his web site Proud2BSafe (www.p2bs.org). Jason used to do his talk for expenses but i think its a bit more than that now. Ken Woodward has been speaking for a long time and yes it a tragic story but the last time i heard him im afraid i dont think it had much impact - might just have been the time constraints he was given to talk with. Have to say the Hamish Macleod talk sound interesting.
(and we finaly have a spull chuker!!!)
