I am currently completing my IPD and have hit a wall

I am on Element 1 – The promotion and development of a positive safety culture in an organisation, and its integration with other management functions 1.1 Developing or reviewing an organisation’s health and safety strategy -

I believed that this was a mission, vision and values document with strategic objectives of my organisation but having discussed with someone else they stated that they believe it is the Health and Safety Policy of the organisation, I understand their thought process around it but I do not interchange between a policy and a strategy??

Could someone please try clear this up for me??

Hi Shaun

The difference between policy and strategy can be a very fine line!

Have you looked at the guidance and examples given at Guide to the Skills Development Portfolio (iosh.com)

?

You could argue that a policy is what you are trying to achieve. For example you policy could be that all buildings maintenance staff should have had asbestos awareness training. Your strategy could then be how you will achieve that full compliance so you would decide:

  • Format of training-online or delivered face to face?
  • Who delivers the training -internal or external?
  • How do you follow up this training making sure that everybody is following it?
  • How do you  get everybody on board and what do you to those staff who have missed the training?
  • Finally how do you know you have full compliance: what does that look like?

Most people just throw it all into one massive document that nobody reads and nobody reviews but don’t say that in your NEBOSH assignment!
