The ACOP says that the WLL can be deratred when you take away a leg of a chainset, but there is no black and white - standard practice for ACOP. I have seen 2 comapnies technical advice saying that 3 and 4 leg slings can lift the same load, but nothing about the effect on the WLL of only using 3 legs of a 4 leg sling. Is it as simple as you just use the technical data for a 3 leg sling? My current issue is a 9T load being lifted by an 11T 4 leg chain using 3 of the legs. Any thoughts from those who know please??

Lawry, When working out the WLL for a 4 leg sling, only the lifting capacity of 3 of the chains is used. This is due to the realistic possibility of non-uniform loading during the lift, due to the stretching of chains (over time) and unequal lifting at the start and end of the lift. So, technically, it is true to say if you have identical chains available for a sling set, the WLL for the 3-chain rig and the 4-chain rig versions will be the same. As such, I see no issue with what you are doing. (But I'm no expert! Your slinger should have a much better understanding of the principles to be applied). Hope it helps, Tony.
