Afternoon All,

we are looking to change from pendant to remotes for some of our overhead cranes. The company has offered a familiarisation on the new remotes, do you think we would need further training?

Thanks in advance

Change to the equipment or process would require at least a toolbox talk to discuss the changes. There should be documented signed acceptance to evidence attendance and understanding.

As it's a change to the controls rather than a significant change to the plant itself; there wouldn't need to be formal certified training/refresher from a third party.

The change of the controls is not considered a 'critical part' of the crane which affects the plants integrity, as such it wouldn't need a new thorough examination under LOLER:

  • "following exceptional circumstances - liable to jeopardise the safety of lifting equipment, which may include:
    • damage or failure
    • being out of use for long periods
    • major changes, which are likely to affect the equipment's integrity (eg modifications, or replacement / repair of critical parts)"

Others may have a different opinion/interpretation?

I agree with Self and Hasty.

I also suggest considering what would happen if the remotes got mixed up, such that an operator was trying to operate one crane with the remote from another.  I've known this happen.

Hey Kate we have icicles in place to prevent people taking a remote whilst in use, each remote has its own purpose made house which has the numbers on the remotes & house, and users place the icicle on the house when using to let others know its in use.

Its also part of the RA & TBT to check, check, check!

I haven't come across this term before - what's an icicle?

Hey Kate,

Its a slim plastic tube which the operator puts their name & number inside, if anyone goes to use the crane it has the operators details on it. We add a clip to the top so they can clip onto things in use.

Common in the railway.

Good morning

One would also assume any risk assessment and safe working procedure would be reviewed.

Something to consider is what happens with remote controls between use for short duration tasks e.g slinging a load or hooking up lifting accessories to the crane hook.  Where is the remote placed?

There was a case a few years ago where an operator placed the remote control into his baggy overall pockets, reached up to detach a beam clamp and accidentally leant onto the remote control.

This resulted in the crane being activated and pulling a 1.7t steel I beam onto the poor chap.

This was a fatal incident.

there are pros and cons with radio remote controls.

thanks
