Good morning all,

I'm looking for inspiration or ideas for a safety stand down day.  I'm sure we've all attended similar events in the past which have basically been death by power point events.  So, I'm trying to avoid that by looking for ideas for a practical / interactive session.

Any help / ideas / pointers is greatly appreciated.

Safety Stand Down Day sounds like an Americanism and as such is probably suspect!

 I am assuming that it means that the employees take a day off and you spend a whole day  just “doing” safety possible via death by PowerPoint!

The employees have a paid day  off work and management think that they have now covered H&S. The issue is of course that safety becomes a thing separate from work. Surely toolbox talks :15 minutes ideally delivered by someone in the front line will have more impact that a whole day of being talked at by a behavioural safety guru. A little delivered often has more impact than an annual H&S orgy.

Having worked for a US multinational we had "Safety Stand Downs" but they never lasted all day.

Usually reinforcing the "Golden Rules" which tended to fail to glitter when anybody actually questioned the detail.

Duke - if you are going to do this, why not start with a HEALTH issue?

....and one where you look at preventive measures that make it less likely that people will be harmed and not sticking plaster solutions such as discussion of the role of your Mental Health First Aiders or Employee Assistance Program (US spelling deliberate) if you have either or both of these.

Doesn't matter what sector you are in. The probability is that the amount of harm arising from occupational health risks is likely to greatly exceed that due to the traditional safety issues.

The only real difference is that the health harms may not present until the future and are rarely counted in an organisation's statistics.

Hey,

I have completed one in my current role based on health and wellbeing, we had various companies come onto site to speak to the staff regarding heart health, diabetes etc etc. we also ran a few videos for staff to watch.

our first aid provider also came in and took people through how to use a defib.

was really good.
