Hey All,

how long do you need to keep crane inspection books for after use. We have a number on site from years ago and struggling to think how they could be required a long period after completing.

According to HSE document INDG422 - there is Table 3, page 5 that stipulates how long to keep records for. Effectively it is 2 years maximum.

thanks for the Info, as its only a preuse check wouldnt it be more  - In-service inspections/tests. Until the next report is made.

I would take a slightly different view and differentiate with the cranes that you have at a fixed site for years and years and the ones which are hired in e.g. for a construction projects.

Suppose you have a site that exhibits features that are liable to cause damage to the plant (I wouldn't restrict my thinking to lifting appliances) e.g. processes that emit corrosive fumes or a coastal site with salty air, then may be what was happening 10 years ago is still relevant to your decision making today - i.e. it provides intelligence to inform the risk assessments that help you decide on e.g. maintenance and inspection schedules.

So, you buy a new crane. The temptation is to bin the documentation on the previous crane, but if that documentation includes reports highlighting corrosion, would you want to lose corporate memory UNLESS whatever was causing issues is no longer a factor and is not likely to recur?
