Afternoon All,

Today I had an overhead crane overrun a stopper (struck and sheared off) causing it to twist due to the stopper on one side working and stop in a position which is not great, the crane lifts up to 15 tonnes and spans a wide section, so if it derailed it would have been a catastrophe.

Question is, is this a RIDDOR? RIDDOR says to report failure of lifting equipment, however the crane didn’t fail, the stopper did, shearing off, allowing it to travel too far, there is a further investigation to complete such as the over travel switch which failed.

thoughts please.

There is often a mismatch between how dangerous an occurrence is and whether it is a dangerous occurrence under RIDDOR.

The exact legal definition of a dangerous occurrence involving failure of lifting equipment is very specific:

" The collapse, overturning or failure of any load-bearing part of any lifting equipment, other than an accessory for lifting. "

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2013/1471/schedule/2

This doesn't seem to be what happened in this case, so it would not be reportable.
