Hello all, I am looking to introduce monthly health and safety meetings into the business, we are a medium sized construction company with leadership team etc and access to the MD.
Who would you invite to monhtly health and safety meetings and should it be a phased approach?
Thanks

Hello Tom,
It sounds to me like you have a good idea of who should be involved. We have safety committee meetings once every quarter. At the beginning of my employment, I introduced monthly meetings and, with all going well, you'll find that the frequency can decrease as the overall safety culture improves. I chair the meetings and attendees include middle management i.e. Production manager and supervisor, Transport manager and supervisor, Maintenance manager and HR. It may be worth inviting an employee (frontline) from a different department each time to help show that everyones opinion counts. Our MD is not involved in the meetings. He is involved thereafter along with the board if any significant decisions need to be made. That is how we do things. Hope it helps.

Construction companies can differ in style to other businesses like manufacturing. Having worked in both I suggest you invite the following: Trade union rep/s or employees representative who can speak for, and to, all employees. Contracts manager/s. A member of the Board who is responsible for H&S. I ran one for four years in a manufacturing facility with all the above, a Production Manager chaired the meeting and the factory Chemist also. I took and published the minutes as soon as I could and followed up on any issues with my name as actioner. as soon as I actioned my stuff I wrote to the members to let them know. That way I led by example and others folloed. Another business was a Bus company with five bus depots and we had a H&S meeting at every on, all five for me to attend therefore I could influence the whole company and gain some consistancy.
