I'm looking for some advice regarding the inspection period for LEVs for grinding. The HSE seems to suggest 14 months, but I'm being told that for grinding it should be 6 months and I'm wondering if there is any specific requirements for 6 months?

You should refer to https://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/priced/hsg258.pdf page 85 where there is a nice table listing the exceptions to the 'usual' 14 month cycle
