Hello Everyone,

Completed my IOSH Managing Safely and NEBOSH General Cert last year and began my first primarily H&S Role.

Im Wondering, What are the next steps? WHat additional courses could i take to further my career and credentials?

Is the Diploma required for further career progression? is the Fire Safety courses essential? Should i be loking into IOSH Membership in the future? WHat other courses are beneficial?

Thank you for your time! :)

How long is a piece of string? What do you want to do with your carrier? Is there a easy progression to see withing your current employer? If so what would be the requirements. If you want to move away look at job sites and see what they are asking. Some may say you need chartered membership - in which case you would need a level 6 qualification (diploma) or progress through the IOSH experience route - look this up on this web site. Do you want to get involved in fire risk assessments? Its not something i have ever done in over 30 years in the industry, but my new employer wants me to get more involved so looking at training.

There is no 100% right or wronge way to progress. And there is no 100% way of ensuring you progress - I applied for plenty of jobs as a chartered member where i got turned down because of some part of the job spec i missed

Hi CB - good advice from HSSnail, but it might also help if you gave a bit more information about the type of industry you work in and a brief indication of the sort of tasks you do.

You can look at progressing up, to the side or both and you can change your decisions from time to time.

So, as example in terms of movement to the side, you COULD decide to specialise more in certain areas such as fire, or you could leave that and stick to a more generalist role - that doesn't mean you never touch the fire risks, but should mean that you recognise the limits of your competence on such matters and avoid crossing a line UNLESS with appropriate support and supervision.

However, as said, your question is one of those "how long is piece of string" ones!

Morning, depending on your role, fire or construction certs could be benefical.  If you do any environmental management as part of your role - or want to - one of the NEBOSH or IEMA environmental courses.  An auditing course or so?

My advice regarding the diploma is to get some experience behind you and be confident in your role before starting.  The new process focusses quite heavily on your experience and without examples to answer the questions, you may find it tricky.

Good idea would be to get a list of potential courses and sit down with your boss and explain how each could develop you and assist in your role or widening your knowledge.  Get those development needs into your PDR.  This will make it easier to get the money out of the bean counters!

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Instead of asking what  training to do next I think it’s better to be led by… where do you want to work? In what type of industry/service doing what type of role? What opportunities are out there that grab you?  Then get the qualifications that’ll get you an interview. I knew an outstanding professional who enjoyed process safety but disliked the idea of H&S for public events. I’m the reverse. We’re both in places where we get to do what we enjoy.

That’s the word! Start with what you “enjoy”. (As much as can be the case when working for a living).
