Hi All,

I'm aware that for some businesses the recommended frequency is 3 years but for most it is 5 years. A client of mine is questionning a ecommendation by their electrician for annual testing. Are there any businesses or sitautions whicg would require that frequency of testing? They are a veterinary practice.

Thanks in advance.

Steve

Hi Steve,

Fixed wire testing is typically carried out every 1 - 5 years. The frequency will be determined by use, exposure to environmental factors etc.

In terms of a vets practice, I would suggest nearer to the maximum frequency of 5 years, although I don't know the specific circumstances related to your business.

One consideration is does the installation meet the requirement of the latest edition, so that could have a bearing on the frequency to ensure compliance.

Whilts you are thinking that a Veterinary Practice should be low risk it is likely the firm is approaching the site as a medical location, open to the public with moisture/dust/temperature hence one year intervals.

Only they can justify why they think such a frequency is required.

In most employements the electricians have been present annually as the site size, and avoidance of disruption to production, do not lend themselves to a single visit and report.

There are only guidelines, no fixed frequencies for FEI tests. Therefore the required frequency is whatever the competent person (electrician who last did it) says it is. Whatever date they set is legally binding. You can't just decide that you will apply some general guidelines and override that date.

There may be some very justified reasons why it's been set at 1 year. For example, where you have wet environments (like swimming pools) it is common to be 1 yearly. Does the surgery have an aqua-therapy bath? The system could be old, and therefore more likely to develop problems etc, etc, etc,

If you disagree with the time period, find another competent person to do the next set of tests (on or before the already recorded Next Test Date) as they may, based on their competence decide on a different test frequency.

Hope it helps,

Tony.
