Afternoon all

I have a site that wedges a final exsit fire door open to allow fresh air / cool air  into the factory. The enviroment is awake and familair from fire safety perspective thoughts on allowing this to continue

All fire doors are checked daily, At the end of day are also check to ensure they are closed secure and this is recorded as part of security protocols

  • Keep closed at all times as its an emergency exsit use only no concessions ?

thanks

There is no general fire safety requirement to keep final exit doors closed nor to use them in emergencies only.  Their purpose is to allow escape and them being open or in use does not compromise that.

It is fire resisting doors inside a building that there is a fire safety requirement to keep closed, in order to limit spread of fire and smoke through the building.

What is the actual problem with the door being open?

For what reason do you want it to be used in emergencies only?

It might be a security concern, but it is unlikely to be a fire safety issue.

Hi John

It seems to me that the problem is probably the sign.

So review the fire risk assessment to check that there is no real justification for requiring the door to be kept close and then get the sign removed or replaced with one that is not going to be routinely ignored!

I agree change the wording on the sign.

My concern is about what is used to 'wedge' the door open.

When I see fire exit doors kept open it is usually with a fire extinguisher as these are usually placed near to fire exits.

If a fire extinguisher is away from its regular sited position and someone looks for that extinguisher to use and it isn't there .........................

During inspections I ask for the extinguisher to be replaced onto its bracket, then the door closes. and on we go.
