Where is the diploma holder based? Geographical location has a bearing.

Which industry / sector are they working in? L.A. work tends to be lower paid compared to off-shore.

How much relevant experience do they have in the industry / sector? Impacts the ay band at the employer.

People with degrees do work for minimum wage in McDonalds and similar.

Karan

I think you have largely ignored the advice given by Roundtuit.

England is a large country. Packages in London tend to be higher than most other places in England and there are substantial variations elsewhere.

....and "any industry" is quite sweeping.

Some industries tend to pay more. Some job titles and job descriptions tend to pay more.

Someone with a NEBOSH Diploma and lots of relevant experience could expect a better package than someone with a qualification but little understanding of the world of work.

Bob, personally I wouldn't read too much into the "conclusions" of that survey.

First the sample size was tiny AND it, in effect, failed to reach those who are not IOSH Members.

So, as example, imagine a "Safety Case Engineer" who might be a chemical or mechanical engineer, and on the balance of probabilities NOT a Member of IOSH, but probably paid more than an OSH professional dealing with conventional H&S issues with a similar level of qualifications and experience, who is more likely to be a Member of IOSH. That Safety Case Engineer is probably on a higher package.

Even the headline finding is factually incorrect. The single greatest cohort said that they hadn't had a pay rise, but the majority (over 70%) had. Actually more than the single greates cohort had received quite substantial pay rises, if you look at the figures presented.

So, this "report" was in places substantially misleading.

Thanks Peter, I can see where you're coming from, I think getting as many sources of information as possible always helps, whether that is the IOSH report, or scanning Indeed or similar webistes, helps create a picture.

Though, I know from experience salaries quoted on some comparison / review websites can be extremely over inflated as they appear to take a range of salaries across a number of businesses / geographical areas to arrive at a value for a particular job role (btw the role in question was not H&S related).

Bob, absolutely, that Karan asked about OSH professionals is largely irrelevant due to multiple variables including location.

So, a quick Google says that median pay in the UK in 2023 was £34,973, but of course this masks the variations from £31,280 in the North East of England up to £44,370 in London.

But that's only one of the variables and not everyone in London is on anything remotely like £44k.

Karan could as well have asked "what's the going rate for a 2 bedroom house?" with one variable (like that NEBOSH Diploma), so maybe a "fitted kitchen". First response would be likely to be "where are you looking to buy?", then "and what else are you looking for?" All else being equal it's still going to cost more in Mayfair than Old Kent Road.
