NEW CAMS APR1000-2S Asphalt Shredder (youtube.com)

Looking for opinions from colleagues - took receipt of a brand new granulator for processing recycled aggregates whilst carrying out the PUWER Assessment the OEM manual showed an exclusion zone of 30metres but no explanation of its purpose I requested a copy of their 12100 risk assessment to understand the purpose which was promptly refused! Whilst there will be exclusion zones for loading of the hopper I am concerned that it is foreseeable that tramp metal or rock flyers could be ejected by the rotating granulator shafts should they jam or pressure applied to a solid object as it only has a shallow hopper.

My control measure would be to raise the sides of the hoppers vertically with a chain mail on 3 slides of the hopper deflecting any projectiles to a safe zone, protecting the excavator with a laminate screen and mesh.

Has anyone out there any experience with this type of equipment have you witnessed projectiles/ejections am I being over zealous with my request for additional control measures? Thanks to all in advance!

Hi Kevin, having worked in UK quarries for nearly 25 years and now working in the forestry industry, the exclusion zone stated is for anything lefting the machine at speed. The important thing is that the RAMS covers the normal operation and that the machine is fed with the correct material.  The exclusion zone is for keeping unprotected persons away from it due to dust noise magnetic belt etc. in normal operation

From my experience if a forgien body enters the machine it will have the option of passing through so no danger, stopping the machine where the danger is then manual handling working at height or the machine throws it out where depeending on the object depends where it goes both height and distance away from the machine. As long as the feed material is clean the normal exclusion zone is ok, however if any employee has a pace maker then the magnetic belt becomes an issue, and other such non standard things become issues.

Hope this helped, Nick
