Posted By JULIE SANDERS further to yesterdays thread about Fire Doors in Educational Premises, thanks for your responses, but I require to know whether the requirement is absolute and if this only applies to buildings of a certain date such as 1970's.

Posted By Ken Taylor There has only been a requirement for self-closing fire doors in certain positions and not for magnetic holders. Self-closing doors in-situ may be there as required by: Building Regulations in force at the time (eg for independent schools); or to meet the requirements of the DfEE (former DES) as set out in Building Bulletin 7 (which applied up to 1998, has been revised from time to time and is probably still obtainable from the DfEE); or, recently, the DfEE Constructional Standards (which are progressively being incorporated into the Approved Documents to the Building Regulations); or the requirements of the Building Control Officers (former District Surveyors); or a Fire Certificate (for any parts considered by the local Fire Authority as requiring one). However, there is now also a need to carry out fire risk assessments (which the DfEE and Fire Authority may ask to see) which could well identify a need for self-closing fire doors. I wish it was simpler!
