My colleague is pregnant and is employed in Service Provision visiting Clients in their own homes, some of these clients are known to be infected with Hepatitis B and also Chickenpox, can anyone out there please give us some rough advice or guidance as to our employers responibilities, we are aware of the more obvious Manual Handling risks but any other help would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks. Mark.

I would recommend that you read the HSE publication HSG122 "New and expectant mothers at work - a guide for employers" ISBN No. 0-7176-0826-3. In cases of highly infectious biological agents such as Hep B and Chickenpox etc. The risk assessment needs to take account of the nature of the agent, how it is spread, how likely contact is and what control measures are in place. The recommendation is that, if there is a known high risk of exposure, then it will be appropriate for the pregnant worker to avoid exposure altogether.

Regards,
Ian

Mark,

As you are looking at infection risks can I suggest you contact the Royal College of Nursing they have a good leaflet explaining some of the issues affecting pregnant nurses.
