Dear All

We are faced with an issue with regard to increasing transport accidents involving our staff who drive company vehicles to travel to & from office. The average distance travelled is 60kms over poor country side roads. We assess all staff required to drive a company vehicle and also have a random speed monitoring regime. However, we believe its the attitude towards driving that needs addressing. I'd appreciate any ideas or approaches that we could use to correct the situation. I'd also appreciate if anyone can guide me to video resources that we could use to inculcate an attitude of "due care" in our staff.

Regards
Shariq

I suggest speaking to the RoSPA road safety people on 0121 248 2000. The road safety material that I use mainly comes from RoSPA.

Shariq,

As well as being a H&S Professional I am a member of the Institute of Advanced motorists (have been for a number of years) and would recommend you look at the cost of getting your people trained by them (it might surprise you just how little it can cost).

It would certainly improve their driving techniques and they would gain much more road sense. Passing the test and becoming a member of the IAM also saves you pounds on your car insurance so there's personal benefits for the employee.

Hope this is of help

Shariq,
We have similar problems with our people flying around the lake district, so before we signed up a company to conduct this type of training we evaluated quite a few.

We selected a company called Drive & Survive. Their contact for enquiries is; enquiries@drivesurvive.co.uk

The company was founded by ex police traffic chaps, their approach is very much one to one. We adopted the half day session, that involved a presentation from a laptop at a location of the candidates choice, followed by a two and a half hour driving session. If the instructor feels a candidate would benefit from a demonstration drive he will offer it. Each candidate gets a driver development profile. That I found very useful

They don't talk at or down to people simply observe and offer online advice.

Regards
Bob

Hi Shariq - the Fleet Safety Forum, a division of 'Brake' have produced some very useful information on managing road risk including a self-audit and a number of leaflets and posters. They can be contacted on 01484 559909 or www.brake.org.uk

Also, I understand that the Driving Standards Agency offers a video entitled 'What if?' for car drivers at a v.reasonable price which may be worth a look. They can be contacted on 0870 7772227.
Good luck!
