Hi Guys

If working on a leading edge on an industrial roof, complete with safety nets and a parapet as fall protection. What is the required amount of area that has to be netted beyond the leading edge, (its a large industrial roof, with bays only being released in blocks of 9, therefore our working area is 7 bays and 2 bays are beyond the leading edge acting as fall protection) Is this a sufficient area?
Is there an actual measurement requirement?

I do not believe there is an exact measurement for this (somebody tell me different).

The required area is an area that will prevent a fall.

Doesn’t sound helpful I know but in relation to the Work at Height Regs, you have to prevent falls. Your netting is to stop people from hitting the ground if they fall.

It will not be much use if a person falls onto the net then slowly rolls of into the distance below, or bounces onto the net and takes off over the side (trampoline style).
If you have done your assessment and the only conclusion is to provide netting then it should be erected by competent people, they will know how it is fitted and advise on its depth or coverage. You need to have a procedure for rescue if some poor soul does take a fall. Have you ever tried to get out of a net suspended up high? Try it with a rescue dummy!!

Fall prevention is always better what about scaffolding edge protection; I know it is difficult on high level industrial units.

Good Luck

I seem to recall there is a minimum area, so that persons do not fall "over " the net and down. Also, nets represent collective fall arrest, which is the 4th Hierarchy of control after avoidance and collective / personal fall prevention.
