We no longer use latex gloves for our care workers, but surprise/surprise we have one
possible case of nitrile glove allergy!!The lady has psoriasis and has found using nitrile gloves aggravates this condition. She is OK with vinyl gloves. However,we have been advised by our local CCDC(HPA) not to use vinyl for personal care tasks.Rather than resorting to neoprene or back to latex, would double gloving be an answer(vinyl/nitrile or cotton/nitrile)?

I am not surprised!
Why not try natural rubber latex again? Provided these are low protein and uknpowdered the risk of latex allergy is absolutely miniscule. If you look at the evidence it is clear that natural rubber latex gloves, if low protein and unpowedered, are the optimum glove for biological hazards. In Finland Prof. Turjanmaa and her team tested these and came to the conclusion that the low protein versions were suitable not only for non-sensitised persons but also for many of those already sensitised to latex.
I am getting a steady trickle of requests for help from those who, in the past, have used natural rubber latex gloves with no problems but, due to the hysteria that surrounds this material, have switched to nitrile and are now experiencing a number of cases of allergic contact dermatitis. In at least one case, switching back to natural rubber latex solved the problem.
You should be aware that many of the chemicals used in the manufacture of natural rubber latex gloves are also used in nitrile gloves. These cause allergic contact dermatitis, as opposed to contact urticaria from the latex protein.

I forgot to mention. There is evidence to suggest that vinyl offers inferior protection against biological hazards compared with nitrile and - the optimum - natural rubber latex.
Furthermore, you need to be careful about disposal of vinyl gloves, since incineration, unless carried out carefully, can result in the release of toxic chemicals (dioxins and vinyl chloride monomers).
