Posted By Carrell I was wondering if anyone could recommend me a decent noise meter. I'm just looking for a type 2 integrating meter to do a basic survey of our site so don't want to spend ridiculous amounts of money. I was considering the legislation starter pack from Castle products; comes with type 2 meter and dosemeter for not much over £1K. Anyone know if these are any good? Thanks, Carrie

Posted By Descarte is this for general noise, environmental noise or worker exposure? If worker exposure and you think the levels will be above the exposure limit it may also be worth getting a meter which can do octave band analysis, this will enable you to compare the noise in the work place against the attenuation of your hearing protection (or make you able to recommend suitable hearing protection) to ensure no over exposure occurs. Other bit of kit to recommend would also be noise dosimeters, this will allow you to measure exactly the noise an employee in a certain position would receive on a 8 hr shift taking in to account rest breaks and working away from noisy areas.

Posted By lewes I was in a similar situation a few months back. There was a facility on the Institute Of Acoustics website that listed manufacturers of sound level equipment but i think it may not now be listed. Fortunately for me the H&S Expo was around the corner so I went there and had a gander. I looked at price, functions, equipment supplied (extras) and ease of use. Many of the reps were happy to come and visit site if needed and some offered training. I narrowed it down to four (Castle,Pulsar, Casella and one other I cant recall) I went for a Casella which wasnt the cheapest but seemed to be the best overall for my needs. Was just over the £1000 inc vat mark. Email me direct if you want any other assistance

Posted By Chris Pope I purchased the Casella CEL- 43. Its dead easy to use, does all I need it to, and the rep is very, very knowleadgeable and answered all of my questions so that I would be fully conversant with the use of the meter. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Posted By Carrell Thanks Guys, I have a rep. from Casella coming over next week to advise on best kit. I'm trying to avoid going as deep as the octave band analysers as I just want point & shoot kit for now and hopefully a dosemeter for specific areas (all dependent on prices). For the majority I plan to carry out noise measurements and draw up a noise map and work out the majority of worker's Lepd from there (the HSE website calculator is great!) It may also be worth my while to ask Castle to offer their options too. Carr
