Safe access for working at heights - man cage in a crane?

Posted By Martin Taylor Evening all.
This might sound like a late Friday daft question but it isn't really.
We operate a plastics moulding shop and ofter require access to different areas of the large machines (at height). Some areas of the machines (where regular access can be expected)are fitted with platforms but for genral maintenance access various ad hoc and hazardous approaches have hitherto been employed.
The production hall is equipped with an electrical overhead travelling crane and the question has been asked today if there is a safe system of work whereby a maintenance man could be manouvered in a cage suspended from the crane?
Has anybody ever used or considered using this approach?
thanks
Martin

Sounds like a strange one Martin ! There would be certain things you would need to consider like :
1 Is the man cage suitable for the task/s 2 The certificate of thorough examination for the overhead crane would change from yearly to 6 monthly as it would be lifting personell and not just loads. 3 A method statement and risk assessment for working at heights plus a rescue plan.
I think you would have a lot to consider for this to succeed Martin.
Hope it helps a bit JJ
