Posted By oobielaire Can anyone help me with this one......at the weekend some kids decided it would be good fun to set alight some recycling containers located in a car park opposite a residential area. The fire completely destroyed the 2 plastics containers and most of a glass one next to them. Residents have now questioned the safety of locating these containers so close to parked cars. Is there any industry guidance specifically relating to the location of recycling containers? I can't find any. I realise it comes down to risk assessment but I would say the majority of our recyling sites are located in car parks (mainly public and not residential) which allow good access for the collection vehicles (although parked cars themselves often create obstruction problems). The containers are emptied regularly although weekends are a problem as there is currently no collection over this time so they tend to get very full. Any help appreciated, cheers.

Posted By Hallmarque Associates Good Morning, I sympathise with you, as an operational Firefighter I attend this type of incident, unfortunately on a fairly regular basis!!. I also own a H&S Company with contracts with a Local Authority I will speak to them this week to look at "Industry Standards" in the meantime, is it not possible to secure an area around your Bins or indeed Move them to another site? Obvious questions I know.

Posted By oobielaire My concern is that if we decide to withdraw from this site, there is then an argument that we should then do so from all the others, having identified a fire risk near parked cars due to vandalism. This would create huge difficulties in relocating containers. I am searching for any industry guidance on location as it seems to be pretty standard to put these in car parks. Apparently kids congregate in this car park when it gets dark, as it is well lit. This tends to happen more in the winter when it gets darker earlier. Perhaps we should get rid of all lighting so the little b***ers will have to go play elsewhere??!
