Posted By GavinR Hi Folks, Have just been reviewing some PUWER assessments recently and came across HSE Guidance sheet C150- Controlling Risks from ejected parts. Now i have updated the PUWER to reflect requirement for vision panels to be added to Planned maintenance schedule but i have 2 questions. Were metal working fluid ingress is identified in the middle polycarbonate screen of 3 layer vision panels what would be the reasonable action to take? Should they all be removed and replaced asap or would it be acceptable to allow a phased replacement of these guards over a period of time? Also we have purchased a new cnc turning machine which is fitted with 1 layer polycarbonate vision panel guards which look very light weight to us and we are worried about it ability to contain an ejected part should that ever happen. The machine is CE marked and according to supplier fully compliant. Has anyone came across this issue before themselves? Any advice? Cheers, Gav

Posted By Tabs "metal working fluid ingress is identified in the middle polycarbonate screen of 3 layer vision panels what would be the reasonable action to take?"..."Should they all be removed and replaced asap or would it be acceptable to allow a phased replacement of these guards over a period of time?" Is the fluid an oil/water mix or what? If there is a risk that the fluid has reacted with the vision panel material, replacement is required as soon as practicable. If there is no risk of damaging the vision panel material, simply clean, seal and replace. "..1 layer polycarbonate vision panel guards which look very light weight to us and we are worried about it ability to contain an ejected part" If you still think this after consulting with the supplier, replace with a thicker piece (altering design, so re-certify), or fix a supplementary grid over the top.

Posted By GavinR Thanks Tabs, The metal working fluid is an oil/water mix and on review of our cnc turning machines approx 75% have signs of ingress into the middle polycarbonate panel. From the guidance document the HSE has issued on this matter they say they need replaced if this occurs so this is what we shall be doing. The guidance states that polycarbonate vision panels degrade by 10% each year on contact with the metalworking fluid so by this statement they must be at risk form damage. Cheers for the feedback.
