I have 5 years health and safety experience with a multi-sited national charity but only took the IOSH Managing Safely Course (lack of funds!). I have since left this role following maternity leave and am now looking to further my health and safety career. Could someone please advise which path I should go down? An agency suggested PgC at Portsmouth but also suggested NEBOSH General Certificate. I am not a graduate but understand you can still go for PgC with relevant experience. Would my experience be enough (I don't want to bite off more than I can chew )? Any advice would be gratefully received.

I am about to start the PGC. The minimum requirements for entry was the Nebosh general certificate combined with relevant experience of which I had to state in my application.
Since I did the NEBOSH cert about 9 years ago, I had to do a professional development course in risk and safety management which was then assessed by the uni before they would allow me to do the PGC. I passed, but had I failed I would not have been granted study.
I suppose the entry quals for the PGC will be the same no matter what uni you apply to, but it may be worthwhile starting off with the Nebosh cert anyway for a proper grounding in health and safety law etc, if you do not already have this through your experience, before moving onto the diploma or the PGC.
Why don't you call the Uni and find out the entry qualifications, then take it from there,

Hello Zola,
I think in your case I may be tempted to take the Nebosh NGC and then after I had secured a position within the H&S industry look to go down the NVQ route at level 4.
If you are intending to specialise then you need to reconsider those options, NVQ at this level will eventually lead to corporate membership with IOSH (MIOSH)

Zola,
As you already have the IOSH Managing Safely course, I cannot see that there is any significant value in completing the NEBOSH General Certificate.
IOSH Membership does offer some careers advice and it is worth contacting them in the first place.
In the case of most Post Graduate courses, the entry criteria is whether the course tutor believes that you would be able to cope with the course or not.

Hi Zola,
The National General Cert does offer a significantly highe level of qualification than Managing Safely, and is aimed at a different type of audience. However, with 5 years of experience you might consider progressing straight to NEBOSH Dip, providing you are confident with academic styles of working and so on,
