Posted By Keith E I did T835 via OU a few years back, as well as T862, and a couple of other courses ('Science Matters") I took the OU route to MIOSH/Grad IOSH, simply because I refused to pay the rip off prices of the DIploma etc etc. I have since gained Grad IOSH, would have been RSP by now if the membership rules hadn't changed for Chartered status etc (not just Tech SPs who feel p***** off about the membership changes etc of recent months!) I have found no problems having OU qualification recognised etc by employers and would recommend OU to anyone wanting to upgrade to Grad IOSH etc. Just gotta go through the silly CPD cycle now to get CMIOSH status etc - not that it will change my approach to the job etc - still the hoops you have to jump through to get the extra money etc - thats the only reason we all do it it - isn't it? Guess £45k a year isn't too bad, more than doubled my salary in the 10yrs I have been doing elf & safety.

I attended interview sometime, the Senior Health and safety advisor was baffled when I mentioned MIOSH, and perplexed when I mentioned T835. All he was interested is my willingness to get NEBOSH General certificate. If a senior H&S officer is not conversant about the routes to qualification in their chosen profession, then I would then be able to make informed decision that hinges on their management capability. All qualification are valid and they all satisfied the requirement for IOSH membership. Employment should not be based on the so called popular route - NEBOSH, but on IOSH status. This trend is also evident in CDM as essential requirement for certain post. A construction engineer with PostGraduate route to MIOSH is put at a disadvantage simply for not having CDM certificate. T835 and other Postgraduate route cover CDM elements and other area such as environment, food safety, agricultural safety and other area such as pollution. It would be ideal if this issue is addressed as part of the CPD in form awareness for IOSH members.
