Hello Everyone,
I am a Canadian looking into health and safety jobs in Europe. I am currently the Health and Safety Coordinator for a ministry in the Provincial government here in Canada. My work experience is mainly in the public sector. I also hold a university degree in occupational and public health.
Would anyone care to give me some advice or tips on working abroad? Is there a demand for health and safety professionals Europe?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Have a great day.

As suggested, I would like to clarify that I would be interested in a position in the U.K. I would be also interested in working in any other country Europe, as long as the health and safety position requires English as the primary language.
Regards,
Asif Janmohamed

I've sent you a pm, recommending SHP listings. Others might suggest alternative sources, but that's the one I used when I re-located from Ontario.

Well, I'm really just seeing what my options are. There are a lot of health and safety jobs here in Ontario, but I find that they are mainly on a contract basis. As an example, I have worked in my organization, the Ontario Public Service, from the bottom up (from being a student in H&S to the H&S Coordinator) and all on contracts (in 5 different ministries).
Is permanency a difficult thing to find, in a H&S job, in the UK or Europe abroad?

Asif;
I am a Canadian safety professional working in Barbados. The work is out there, you need to identify specifically what you are looking for. For example gaining employment in the UK may be difficult if you cannot get sponsored by an employer whereas in Australia I believe they implemented a new immigration program where your education, skill and age makes immigration possible under their skills demand program.
Second issue I thing you need to address is expanding your work sector. At the end of the day safety is safety, risk exposure is risk exposure. Where most employers get hung up is understanding what you know and translating that into their language. Are JHA's really any different in the mining, construction, oil and gas or municipal works - no but the language that each industry speaks is and that is what most organizations hang a professionals qualifications on.
Anyhow thats my two cents worth.

Asif, europe is over populated and too bureaucratic. that's why i'm going to Canada. i wish i could swap with you but your experience is greater than mine so it wouldn't be fair on you. why not go to western Canada? especially Vanc region what with construction projects there now?

Asif - Have you considered an excahnge program for a short period of time, to see if working in the UK is what you want. I currently work as a health and safety inspector in local government with simular skills/qualifications, and am thinking of jobs in Canada. I may be able to persuide my employer to consider an exchange program. In principal is it something your current employer would consider.

sonshine,
If you're looking to leave Europe because it is too bureaucratic, I would suggest not working for any government body in Canada. The private sector may be best for you...Where the saying, "time is money" is actually worth something.
Regarding your comment about Western Canada, you will find that there are many differences between the provinces in Canada. For example, the following vary greatly between provinces: taxes, cost of living, ethnic diversity, primary language used, employment, weather, etc.
The biggest “boom” in the employment market has been in the province of Alberta, where the economy has been good. There are many health and safety jobs available. I have been there many times and it is a very beautiful place, however I do not have an interest of living there.

Nic,
Thanks for the posting.
The position I currently work in is in Human Resources. It is very different from the health and safety inspector postion you mentioned. The position involves aspects of disability management, worker’s compensation, employee assistance, attendance support, among many other programs. To explain it a little better, is more stragtegic than operational.
I am very well aware of the health and safety inspectors in Ontario, who work for the Ministry of Labour. I would suggest that you contact them and suggest an exchange program, as those are the positions that would have a very similar skill set as you. Their website is: http://www.labour.gov.on.ca/.

Hi Everyone,
It has come to my attention that almost every e-mail that I have received has some mention of a reason why not to go to the U.K. I found that most people who replied actually want to go to Canada.
I would like to ask, what is it about the U.K. that people dislike?

personally, it's overcrowded, but then i didn't grow up here so i'm more for the open spaces and breathing room etc. i came over to UK because Zim was falling apart and time has proven that it was a good move at the time. so as there's very little to go back there for.....

Hello,
i´m having some doubts about this.
Browsing trought this website : http://europa.eu.int/com...gprofs/dsp_bycountry.cfm , inside the commom internal market the acess to H&S professions is not the same in each State Member.
For example the profession is not regulated in UK, but here in Portugal it is. If you consider to work abroad in the european union you face many dificulties.
So my question is, whould you need to get some NEBOSH certification in order to work in UK ? Altought it´s not mandatory, many job´s posted in http://www.monster.co.uk/ demand´s it.
What are the demand´s for H&S positions in Canada ?
Is the profession regulated there in Canada ?
Thank´s for any input.
