Posted By Tommy Cooper The difficulty I find is that employers usually want the qualifications and experience as a combination, but many employees who have the qualifications cannot get started on the career ladder to gain experience. Without experience I have seen many people stuck unable to get interviews, but everyone needs a chance to start somewhere.

Give me some one with 10 years industrial hygiene experience, 10 years safety advisor experience and 10 years safety manager expereince any day over some one with little or no expereince but who has CMIOSH after their name. With suitable references checked with reputable companies obviously and a good interview showing their standard of knowledge and experience. Des RSPCA

While I'll be the first to admit that I'm no fan of fancy certificates and fancy titles, and I much prefer an experienced person rather than someone with a certificate without the experience. I agree with a previous poster that you cannot become a GradIosh/CMIOSH etc. etc. without both the academic qualification and the experience to back it up. While I can understand the frustration of people (myself included) with the posters who bash others who are not GradIOSH/CMIOSH etc. etc. I wonder if we are not shooting ourselves in the foot here by questioning the competence/experience/worth?of the Holders of the forementioned qualifications. I have worked very hard over the years to get experienced and to study for and take exams to become a member of IOSH, which is regarded as a premier organisation, the letters after my name (allthough rarely used) are something I am proud of .The CMIOSH title is something I and many others seek to attain as an indication to others of our commitment to our professional development. While the letters are not strictly needed to be good at your job, it is nice to say you have them after putting in all the hard work to get them. Sorry if I'm waffling folks.

Posted By Descarte That wasnt always the case of getting MIOSH or now CMIOSH. I belive that before the changes and introduction of CPD all you required really was your diploma for MIOSH and if you had MIOSH before Nov last year or what ever you got a free upgrade to CMIOSH no CPD etc required. Therefore could there not be a bunch of CMIOSH wandering around with little experience and only a diploma which could have basically been bought off ebay to their names?

Posted By Norman T IOSH states that it has 30,000 members, with 8,000 of them being CMIOSH. I don't know what proportion of the membership contribute or even look at this forum - I'm sure it is a very small proportion. So in my opinion, people shouldn't take the views expressed on these forums as being those of the majority of members. I'm sure that the majority of the CMIOSH_ers don't look down on those that haven't attained that grade yet. Don't be put off by the few vocal people - the majority are just getting on with their job like most other people.
