I have posted the following to hopefully help IOSH members in finding work not only overseas, but in the UK.

Over the last few weeks we have been sent cv's by IOSH members for senior health and safety management jobs for our company in Dubai. Some of the reasons they have have been rejected are as follows:

1. CV is full of generic statements and does not included any reference to any achivements. The CV has been badly written, (Often by a so called CV specialist or recruitment company) normally several pages long. 2 or 3 pages should say it all.

2. When interviewed on the telephone(First Stage) they give reasons for changing job such as; looking for more money, present job is too demanding, they are looking to work less hours, etc.

3. Do not have the experience for the job or knowledge of health and safety management. ( Site Safety Inspectors are not always qualified to be managers regardless of qualifications.)

So please if your looking for a job overseas remember they are often top level management roles which require people to manage not only health and safety but also have a working knowledge of management practices such as finance / budgets, HR,Public Relations etc.

Tip to all members is to attend management courses other than health and safety, and to learn the skills required from todays employers.

Can you give advice to those wishing to go into not so high positions. I have worked as an advisor for just under 4 years.

I have previous management experience, but not relevant in health & safety roles. Can you suggest where to look or register CV 's or job titles to apply for in particular. Maybe a specific industry to focus on?

Dubai Safety,

If the principal reason for a candidate is a requirement for more money, why should an honest person not state this as a driving force during a telephone interview?

I am not taking issue, it is simply the take of an honest-Joe reading your post. If your view (and the view of others) is that money as an incentive for an employment move is a poor reason to state, this may have a bearing on why I, as a CMIOSH only earn £23K!

I have, until this point been un-bashful in stating earning more money as a reason for an employment move. If this is a genuine no-no, I shall re-assess my outlook when applying for positions.

Grateful for your, or other employers thoughts.

Richie

It the way you say it though, ie. dont say wanting more money, say wanting a new / bigger challange, or more responsability. Sorta means the same thing but dosnt sound as bad as saying gimme more money

Hello Dubai Safety,

While talking of Managerial Positions in OHS, is nationality a criteria also?

Is there an 'equal opportunity' system in Dubai Safety jobs?

I hear there are some qualified, experienced, multilingual (an important dimension in the Gulf) OHS professionals with gulf experience, who have not been considered for the above positions. Is that true?

Please advise

Warm regards

raj

Interesting comments from everyone, just to give some answers to the questions raised;

1. When stating a move is for more money, interviewers will ask themselves how long would this person stay, and will this person jump ship every time they see a job offering more money?

2. As for the question on how to gain new roles and what area of safety you should go into; that is purely depending on your background, capabilities and skills.

3. Very interesting questions from Raj, I can honestly say there is equal opportunity recruitment in Dubai and nationality is not a problem here for any positions. (80% of the population are expats)

Within my team of safety professionals, I have both men and women from 14 nationalities in senior and middle management positions and we are still recruiting on a global basis.

As for your last question on people who have not been considered for positions in the past and rejected. It can be for various reasons such as; not having the relevant experience, salary expectations, questionable qualifications, or a better candidates applied at the time etc; I would suggest that you keep trying and the right job will come along.

*********
Finally, to everyone I would like to point out that the majority of jobs for health and safety in Dubai are on some of the world’s largest construction projects, which are up to 20 years of development and include some of the world’s tallest buildings both present and future. Therefore, the chance for developing your career to the highest level (excuse the pun) is here for the taking, so good luck.

Dubai Safety

I studied and work in Australia as a Safety Advisor, and would like to work in the UK. I currently hold an Advanced Diploma in Occupational Safety, Health and Training. Is my qualification recognised by NEBOHS.

As this thread seems to have run it's course (and to protect posters from the temptation of breaching AUG 3 and getting into trouble with us), the Moderators have agreed to lock this thread.
