Posted By Steve Mumby Until recently our site FLT instructor trained and retrained drivers without Occuppational Health medical clearance. Our Global standards and the ACOP suggest driver medicals are appropriate. Q Has anyone any examples to illustate the point of the importance of medical fitness to FLT and plant users to our Occupational Health dept. Our trainer is still training without medicals in place Q what is the likely outcome and implications ?

Posted By Bob Matthews Steve, As I understand it everyone over 40 has to have a medical every 5 years and everyone over 65 has to have one every year. We carry out medicals on all our drivers before they start working for us anyway to ensure there are no problems, which are likely to hit us in the future and to ensure they are capable of the work. Regards Bob

Posted By Chris Pollington Hi Steve, If you take a look at HS(G)6 safety in working with fork trucks, it clearly states the medical requirements required. We give medicals at the time of re-training which for our high reach drivers is 2 years and all others 3 years. At the very least your trainer should know whether the trainees can see past the end of their nose, we have had a number of instances where the first time a person realises that they have a sight defect is when having their flt medical. I presume that your trainer has the correct competencies to train (which is different to just qualifications) Regards Chris.

Posted By Ian Lumsden Hi Steve, I am a qualified RTITB forklift truck instructor, and all of our operators over 40 have medicals and every five years and there after. This is mentioned in the HS(G)6, if you have an unfit operator and they have an accident due to this fact, then you can think of the consequences that it can bring to your company. Ian.
