Hi
Does anyone have any experience of packaging systems using MDI (isocyanate)based foam that they are prepared to share? I know that this stuff is a respiratory sensitiser but I am not certain on the health surveillance requirements.
Thanks
Maddy

I assume that you are referring to the two-pack foam systems where the components are mixed in the nozzle immediately before the foam is used to fill a package. If so, I have carried out personal monitoring in such a situation and found no airborne isocyanate. Even static samples taken immediately over the developing, warm foam found no isocyanate.

Paul

I have similar experiences to Paul.
Basically it is a matter of keeping the equipment is good repair.
Please contact me direct if you want detailed help. I am responsible for a number of different types of MDI foaming plant.

A few years back I investigated a RIDDOR reportable case of occupational asthma attributed to use of this type of packaging system. The suppliers carried out air monitoring (not personal monitoring) for short term exposure but I was not happy with the accuracy of the colorimetric results - had exposure been reduced to as far below MEL as reasonably practicable? More detailed sampling was carried out following an Improvement Notice (potentially requirng provision of LEV or repositioning of the equipment). This monitoring indicated extremely low levels of isocyantes (far below MEL) so no further action was taken except requiring health surveilance for those persons using/near equipment.
