We have just been notified of a sharp increase in the price of old cooking oil collections from our school kitchens here in Brum. The reason for the price increase is given as 'Legislation'but I feel that this is, to put it politely, incorrect. Does any other safety/environmental professional have similar dealings? I'd be grateful for any views.

Posted By Jan Moore Paul Many thanks for your response. The SI I am referring to is The Animal By-Products (Amendment) (England) Order 2001. I just wondered whether anyone had come across problems with waste oil collectors quoting the title of this piece of legislation (presumably to scare!)

Posted By Bill Elliott I agree it is unlikely to be Legislation that is at the bottom of it. Waste oil, like other wastes, is subject to the ebb and flow of the market. The Amendment Order being quoted is just an extension of the original 1999 Animal By Products Order which prohibits the feeding to livestock of certain categories of catering waste. The 2001 amendment extended that to waste cooking oil. There are alternative means of recycling however, your local EHO may be able to give names of suitable companies who will reuse the oil for the cosmetic industry (soaps etc).

Posted By Andy Petrie Have you tried asking them exactly what legislation they are refering to and why it has resulted in a price hike. Try looking at alternative suppliers and see what they charge. Go back to your suppliers, tell them you are looking at others and see what they say.
