Is anyone familiar with the Animal By Product Order 2001?
We have just been notified of a sharp increase in the price of old cooking oil collections from our school kitchens here in Brum. The reason for the price increase is given as 'Legislation'but I feel that this is, to put it politely, incorrect.
Does any other safety/environmental professional have similar dealings?
I'd be grateful for any views.

The HMSO website does not have any details of the legislation you have quoted. Are you sure that you have it right?

Many thanks for your response.
The SI I am referring to is The Animal By-Products (Amendment) (England) Order 2001.
I just wondered whether anyone had come across problems with waste oil collectors quoting the title of this piece of legislation (presumably to scare!)

If we're talking animal by products this would surely only apply to cooking fat, as opposed to cooking oil, which is mainly vegetable.
I have spoken to our caterers who are not aware of any recent changes. However they did mention that in an effort to reduce costs they get a company to come in and filter and otherwise "rejuvenate" the oil. This might offset your increased costs

I agree it is unlikely to be Legislation that is at the bottom of it. Waste oil, like other wastes, is subject to the ebb and flow of the market. The Amendment Order being quoted is just an extension of the original 1999 Animal By Products Order which prohibits the feeding to livestock of certain categories of catering waste. The 2001 amendment extended that to waste cooking oil. There are alternative means of recycling however, your local EHO may be able to give names of suitable companies who will reuse the oil for the cosmetic industry (soaps etc).

Have you tried speaking to your local McDonalds restaurant. They generate significant quantities of waste cooking oil which is collected for recycling. If there has been a rise in the price they will know, or may know of a better collection service.

Have you tried asking them exactly what legislation they are refering to and why it has resulted in a price hike. Try looking at alternative suppliers and see what they charge. Go back to your suppliers, tell them you are looking at others and see what they say.
