Posted By Ken Lucas Ron One of my friends is involved in the manufacture and supply of such items and he isn't aware of any British Standard for such - however there may be a bog standard. Ken

Posted By Ian Minty Unfortunately, Ronnie's on holiday this week. All I can say at the moment is that we're meeting the suppliers today to discuss a problem that we have had with toilet roll holders and bins that they have supplied.

Posted By Jack So the concern is that these devices are unsafe? I wish I had time for problems like this.

Posted By Ian Minty If the problems mean that we could have numerous schools burn down, with the resultant loss of young lives, of course we will have time for the problem.

Posted By Eric Burt Ian You haven't given too many details about the nature of your problem, but I take it that children in your schools are setting light to the toilet paper and you are concerned about school fires? It would be difficult to eliminate paper from toilets, although many schools have now installed hand driers instead of using paper towels to dry hands. There is no need for bins in toilets (except for female toilets where sanitary disposal is a requirement under the Workplace Regs 92) so once again you are reducing the amount of paper / sweet wrappers / crisp packets which could be set alight. I have seen one school where they had to introduce a key system for using the toilets as they were getting so much damage, but I would think that this would be very much used as a last resort. I have never seen a smoke detctor in a school toilet, but once again, this could serve as a deterrent, as would increasd supervision with the use of prefects (if they still have them??) Good luck Ian and I hope you manage to sort your problem Cheers, Eric

Posted By Ken Taylor You need to ensure that there is nothing else within the toilet room that will readily ignite from contact with burning toilet paper and if the use of this paper for fires is a problem use the type of toilet roll holders that are non-comustible and do not have a revolving rod for holding the paper and therefore only allow one sheet of paper to be dispensed at a time. In addition to limiting or confining fire risk this should help with the other problem of unrolling all the paper and stuffing it down the pan. It has been said that one can derermine the moral standard of a nation by the condition of its toilets.

Posted By Ian Minty It is the holders and bins themselves which are highly flammable. One, with no paper in it, was set alight by a pupil and three floors of the building filled with acrid smoke. When we carried out tests on the newly supplied equipment it was discovered that the plastic caught fire in approx. 10 seconds and was highly flammable. That was why we were looking for the BS, to see if there was a standard, regarding flammability etc.

Posted By Ken Taylor Plastics present one of the greatest risks in fires and can decompose to form a 'cocktail' of toxic gases that may attack the central nervous system and prevent the ability to flee - in addition to asphyxiation, etc. Waste bins are usually best in metal in order to contain their contents if ignited and other sanitary items would be better in ceramics, metal, hard wood and similar materials that are not readily combustible. We really need to plan buildings and their contents to resist fire and the attacks of vandals rather than going for the pretty or the seemingly less expensive.

Posted By Jim Walker Ian, I guess the real problem is your education authority buyers are not aware of Ruskin’s famous saying, I quote: " There is hardly anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price only, are this man’s lawful prey " (John Ruskin, 1819 - 1900)
