Posted By SarahD I have just been asked by my boss on any information concerning changes to regulations about the need for safety glass in public buildings, the new requirment being safety glass up to 2m high every-where. He is under the impression that some new regulation will be coming out in January 2004. I have not been able to find anything on this, or any indication of changes to the current 1991 building standard. Any-one have any clues for me? As we maintain and refurb public buildings he is starting to panic despite assurances that changes like this are generally not retrospective!

Posted By Ken Taylor The Building Regs apply to new build and alterations to existing buildings and are not retrospective. The other legislation on safety glass at work is the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regs 1992 which require windows and other architectural glass to be of a safety material or protected against breakage where necessary for reasons of safety. This requires risk assessment and checking the Approved Code of Practice (L24) and published standards. Perhaps your boss could enlighten us as to the source of the 2m rule rumour?
