Posted By SarahD I have just been asked by my boss on any information concerning changes to regulations about the need for safety glass in public buildings, the new requirment being safety glass up to 2m high every-where. He is under the impression that some new regulation will be coming out in January 2004. I have not been able to find anything on this, or any indication of changes to the current 1991 building standard. Any-one have any clues for me? As we maintain and refurb public buildings he is starting to panic despite assurances that changes like this are generally not retrospective!

Posted By Paul Murphy Sarah, as far as I am aware, the current standard is in the Building Regs 2000 Document N. Looking at them I cannot see how they can be taken any further! Let me know if you would like a pdf version or go to the web site of the Office of the Dep Prime Minister (www.odpm.gov.uk) Good luck

Posted By Ken Taylor The Building Regs apply to new build and alterations to existing buildings and are not retrospective. The other legislation on safety glass at work is the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regs 1992 which require windows and other architectural glass to be of a safety material or protected against breakage where necessary for reasons of safety. This requires risk assessment and checking the Approved Code of Practice (L24) and published standards. Perhaps your boss could enlighten us as to the source of the 2m rule rumour?

Posted By SarahD Thanks for the help, those mentioned are the current requirements, this is apparently something new. we have had a promtional advert from a glazing firm informing of new requirements coming in January 2004. Have now managed to find out that new requirements will be put forward for consultation in Jan 2004, probably revision of current building regs, if any-one has any inside information of these let me know, otherwise will just have to wait and see. sarah
