I am looking at having all the hand tools tested for safe usage times to come in line with the physical agents directive. I am health and safety adviser to a small/medium construction company and require this done in order to get local government contracts and comply with their health and safety policy, as well as to comply with regulations.
Does anyone know how much it would cost to test aproximately 100 hand tools, as I have been quoted between £50-£75 per tool. Is this over the top?

charges can vary from £40 to £75 per tool. I have seen some charge in excess of £100.

I charge only £45 per hour!! I think it's time we revised our prices then!

Our local Builders Equipment centre in Norwich recently quoted me approximately £3 - £5 per item. Perhaps you ought to try BE in your area, or equivalent suppliers, as there are obviously cheaper solutions out there!

Better still - go on the training, buy the equipment and do it yourself and hire yourself out at those ridiculous prices!

Contact the manufacturers and suppliers of the tools you have.
GAP produced a chart last year - but it was based on the 2.8m/s daily exposure level not the revised 5m/s.
They may have upgraded it now.
You are best to try and assess the average weighted acceleration of the tool - as indiviudal assessments will always be out of date as it depends on an individual's grip, the material be worked on, being reasonably practicable is the only way to address this. The HSE code of practice is very short on practical advice so a rough assessment is all that can be used.
If any indiviudal is using equipment daily all day - that's when I would get the personal dose metres in.
