Posted By clegg Hi Can anyone give help with an example of a risk assessment of working on or near a boating lake. open to the public. I have to do this as part of a new parks project and am running out of ideas.

Posted By James Fleming Clegg, you don’t mention if there are people working on in or near the water. Also is there a current of some sort? Some of the things you might want to look at are as follows; they are not in any order. · Can the workers that work in / near water swim. · Is there appropriate PPE? Ie Lifejackets or Buoyancy aids provided. Remember, they are different bits of equipment for different situations. They also come with a minimum recommendation regarding the inherent buoyancy. · If there is a current and workers are working near or in the water you might think about fixing a rope of some sort about 25m down stream, bank to bank. The rope should have some sort of floatation and be visible. This is to act as a ‘rail’, if one falls in then they can hold on to the rope to prevent being washed down stream. · Training; make sure training is provided. · If they are in the water make sure they have enough warm clothing and suitable protection against the water. Remember the body losses heat at a terrific rate in water as in opposed to being in air. · Hot drinks. Just some thoughts…. James

Posted By Stephen D. Clarke Hi, I've found the RoSPA document "Safety at Inland Water Sites - Operational Guidelines" to be really helpful in this area.
