Some of the things you might want to look at are as follows; they are not in any order. · Can the workers that work in / near water swim. · Is there appropriate PPE? Ie Lifejackets or Buoyancy aids provided. Remember, they are different bits of equipment for different situations. They also come with a minimum recommendation regarding the inherent buoyancy. · If there is a current and workers are working near or in the water you might think about fixing a rope of some sort about 25m down stream, bank to bank. The rope should have some sort of floatation and be visible. This is to act as a ‘rail’, if one falls in then they can hold on to the rope to prevent being washed down stream. · Training; make sure training is provided. · If they are in the water make sure they have enough warm clothing and suitable protection against the water. Remember the body losses heat at a terrific rate in water as in opposed to being in air. · Hot drinks. Just some thoughts…. James
