Posted By Rachael Powell I have been asked by a friend who has a 2500 storage of kerosene on their work premises for heating supply. It has a suitable container but no bunding was constructed with it. I have said that it should be bunded but the company will not listen to reason. Does this fall under the 'The Control of Poluution Regs & DSEAR regs also? It is also close to a fresh water drain & guttering is about 1 metre away? There is no room around the container either....should it be removed?

Posted By Paul Leadbetter Rachael I think kerosene counts as 'oil' so see http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2001/20012954.htm Paul

Posted By Fred Pratley The following is extracted from the Environment Agency leaflet on the Oil storage regulations Which types of oil are covered? All types of oil, with the exception of waste oil, are covered by these regulations, including petrol, diesel, vegetable, synthetic and mineral oil. Waste oil storage is covered by the Waste Management Licensing Regulations. Kerosene is simply another form of oil, so you are correct, it requires bunding etc. regards Fred

Posted By Neil Koskie The Oil Storage Regs apply to 200 litres or more and Kerosene is covered under the Regs as previously stated. The key requirements are: 1. There must be a bund to intercept any leaks from the container and its pipework. 2. The bund surrounding the tank should have sufficient capacity to contain 110% of the maximum content of the tank. 3. Above ground pipework should be supported and underground pipes should be protected from incidental damage and have leakage detection. 4. Rainwater drainage should not be allowed to enter the bund. 5. The bund walls and base should be periodically inspected and must be constructed from impermeable materials. Hope this helps Neil

Posted By Salus Rachael, as Neil, also if there is a significant risk, e.g. oil stored within 10 mts of inland freshwaters or coastal waters or within 50 mts of a well or borehole, you will need to bund the storage. If you cannot do this with your existing storage you will have to relocate.just make sure that your company took all reasonable measures to prevent any foreseeable pollution scenarios
