Posted By Steve P UK Grade 2 listed church, leaky cast iron gutters, but just seems to be from failed joints. By the time scaffolding costs are worked out, it seems as if it might be worth renewing all the rainwater goods - but the client is reluctant to pay for cast iron, so wants "folded" aluminium (never heard of it) rather than cast iron or cast aluminium. How reasonable would it be to work off ladders / climbing boards for isolated repairs, like sealing gutter joints, (a) for gutters at about 4 metres high, (b) gutters on a clerestorey roof (the 4 metres to the aisle eaves, then a 30-degree pitched roof, then 1.5m to the clerestorey eaves)?

Posted By MarkJAWatkins Would it be possible to gain access with a MEWP? Prob be a fraction of the price compared to scaffold if access permits. Prob best with a cherry picker with quite a large boom. The positive side is if the works are going to last a week or so, they won't have an unsightly mess over the building. Regards, Mark

Posted By Steve P UK MEWP would reach most of the lower guttering but not the clerestorey.

Posted By stephencarey you may be able to use a crane with a man bucket. These have longer reach capabilities.

Posted By Ken Taylor Doesn't seem like a ladder job to me. You'll probably need 2 hands for the gutter lengths and getting the old gutters out without damaging the brackets - which I suspect they will want to retain!

Posted By Robert K Lewis If its failed joints I doubt you will get planning to undertake renewal. The access problem is still there though. Without a site plan I cannot comment on the use of MEWPS, most of the good hire companies will do a survey and recommend the best machine, even if the scaffold has to be used on the clerestorey the costs will be reduced. There are some pretty formidable pieces of kit around mowadays, some with a small footprint for movement but with up to 30m reach. I cannot see ladders as a sensible option on this work. Bob
