Posted By Roy Hull With regard to risk assessments, i have always completed them or requested they are completed for all pieces of plant and any tasks taking place. This meant i would have risk assessments for dumptrucks, mobile elevated work platforms etc. and the same then for excavation works, general site traffic movements etc. Now a fellow professional is saying that training on the mobile equipment and having a site wide risk assessment for traffic movement is adequate. I do not agree and was wondering what other opinions are. Thanks

Posted By Robert K Lewis My immediate thought concerning the information given to you was "OK, but where is the risk assessment for the work itself". Yes you can develop these overarching assessments but they will be for key standard risks for the project. You would thus look at overall asessments for such as: Scaffold manqagement Traffic routes and control Deliveries Use of plant etc etc These then need to be backed up by individual assessments that are abbreviated because of the base assessments already done. In essence it would be the PC setting up the standardised material with other conntractors incorporating it into their local assessments. Hope this helps, but there are a myriad of views on this thorny topic. Bob

Posted By Paul Leadbetter Roy As the legislation is goal-setting, how you achieve the objective is less important than getting there! If your system works, stick with it. On the other hand, if the suggested scheme saves you time and effort (but still enables you to reach the objective), it's got to be worth a try. Paul

Posted By Andrew I. Butler Good Afternoon Roy Your thread started by giving reference to risk assessments you conduct for work equipment. There is nothing wrong with this, and I would recommend you continue to do so. Consider Starting the process of assessing risk by looking at the tasks you perform within a given area. You should have assessments for all of these tasks and where plant and equipment is used have a management system for identifying and recording suitable assessments, which you can cross reference within the task. I know this may seem a little bit "over the top" for the SME to comprehend, never the less in this liabilous world in which we now find ourselves any evident that supports "reasonably practicable" is worth endorsing. I can give you access to some very useful PUWER assessment forms should you wish to email me direct.
