Does anybody have a smoking policy for the whole of its premises including outside. As the company wants to enforce a whole ban on its premises.

Hey John,
Since when have your company owned the air outside their building. Personally I'd tell them to shove it or make it a management decision not a safety one. Then staff will see that it's got nothing to do with health, just management being petty to the n'th degree.

Whilst we are on the subject. OUr policy waffles on about looking after the interests of our employees etc. But what gets me is the policy fails to look after employees who work in occupied premises, namley houses, where the occupier smokes. Can anybody give me sensible ideas of how this can be addressed. I don't think a mask is sensible, although i have suggested asking the occupier to leave the building or smoke in another room. What other suggestions are there?

Any place that there are smokers having a puff on work premises either outside or in, is a safety issue - a fire safety issue
Our company bans smoking on site for fire safety reasons and everyone accepts this policy

Steve,
No not everywhere is a fire issue. I used to work on an high explosive site but there were still areas where you could smoke!
Obviously if there's a specific fire risk it would be the height of stupidity to show any naked flame. Come on be reasonable - you knew I didn't mean where there was a specific risk.

Even though our MD is a smoker he has produced a no smoking policy and smoking is banned in all buildings. Funny enough I've never seen him standing outside with the rest of the smokers!

Point taken - but you can take the stupid away from the possible but not the stupidity out of the stupid.
That didn't make sense but then again it is nearly friday.

A number of years ago I made recommendations and implemented a policy restricting smoking via the Safety Committee, after complaints from employees. No problem in itself but it caused no end of other issues regarding when personnel could smoke, where and for how long.
Thankfully the Site Manager made it very clear that the origins of the policy where entirely correct but all the follow-on issues were general management issues and not a matter for the safety committee or the safety manager - saved me no end of grief!!!

I'm with Rob T on this one. Again. Smoking/no smoking is either a health or a safety issue. Maybe sometimes both if you are on a "dangerous" site
No smoking in the building is a health issue.
No smoking on a refinery or equivalently dangerous site is normally a safety issue but they often install "smoking cabins" at remotish areas of the site. (I recently had to search out and buy a "mechanical" camera (no battery) so as to comply with site regulations. Not easy)
"no smoking outside the building" is neither a health not a safety issue. It is one of "corporate image" (huddled masses taking a quick drag around the corner)
Nowadays when I visit a "dangerous" site I slap on a patch before I get out of the car. Usually gets me through the day (if they supply lots of coffee)

Hi Rob
To me it is not a fire issue as there is already a designated smoking shelter away from are building, which we have had for the last two years with no problems on site.
But my managing Director wants a total ban. We can do this with the new smoking laws that come in next year as long as we give them between 3-6 months notice. But the problem we will have is 150 employees smoke on site.
