I don't usually mind reading regs etc but the Simple Pressure Vessel Regs leave me cold.
We produce welded heat exchanger units and then fix ancilliary pipework to the assembled unit. Compressed air is then used to check for leaks at 40psi. The construction doesn't appear to fall within the realms of the regs, can anyone point me in the general direction of user friendly guidance to understand the regs.

Surely you pressure test with water due to the inherent explosion risk with air if the vessel fails (water is not compressible and so can't store energy - sorry if I am patronising you!!)

The welded parts are subjected to a water test at higher pressure. This particular test is for 15mm and 22mm copper pipework attached to the unit. Essentially this is to test that compression joints which are fitted later in the process are sealed. Sorry to have been a little misleading.

Hmmm.
I had the same conversation with an engineer once, no convincing them to use water.
Mainly because the insurance engineers test gas pressure vessels on site with air I couldn't convince the engineer it was a bad idea to test something that was designed to carry liquids with a gas.
Bad comms day.

Not that I don't sympathise Nick, it was just your reply came up in between me reading gary's post and you posting your reply.
Apologies to everyone I can't string a sentence together today.

It's an extremely long time since I had to get into pressure vessel regs, but isn't there a minimum diameter (20 cm anyone ?) before it becomes a "vessel" ?
