I wouldnt mind and have considered working in these areas, of those who are kidnapped it is often reported that they are well cared fore and released un harmed, obviously they are worth more alive than dead.
The only question I have is, would you get paid over time for the extra days you were held captive? Best read the contract carefully :p

Kelvin are you a troll? or is that MarkSMark in disguise?
I work in a lot of these types of places both for my previous company (not oil) and also now as a freelancer (sometimes oil). Why should I not be a safety practioner? Somebody has to cover the safety aspects of working abroad or do you think that you should only work in the UK? There are over a 1000 members of IOSH who are based abroad - should we just forget about them?
You are indeed entitled to your view but on this occasion I just find you ignorant!

You don't know me, but thanks for judging and condemining me as a professional safety adviser, just because I choose to work in Nigeria. I think your post was one of the most offensive I've ever read on any forum.
I work for one of the oil majors and to say that my employers and other oil companies don't take safety seriously is a extremely misguided statement. Lots of people die if we get safety wrong on oil installations - remember Piper Alpha. Incidently the swim test you so graphically described is required in Nigerian legislation for those working offshore and using crew boats to get there.
Despite the poverty and social problems, Nigeria is one of the friendliest countries I've visited. Yes there's problems with corruption, but as Nigerian told they learnt well from their old colonial 'masters'.

"You lot who would go into a well know corrupt and very dangerous country just because the money is good should not be safety professionals."
Kenny & Rob
I think the thrust of Kelvin's contribution is as above. I don't really understand your objections - if you carefully read the above sentence he says '.....just because the money is good ....'.
I agree with him, if that is the only reason then it is morally wrong to work in a corrupt country or company or anything else.
You two clearly, from your responses, do not do it purely for the money (although I must say Kenny your response does seem a bit extreme, as though the comments have hit a sensitive spot).
I find it quite disconcerting how many contributors to this forum seem to look for and find imaginary slights. And most of the time without properly reading the inputs.

I was hoping there would be more comments on the moral issues of working just for the money!

In answer to "is there any jobs going" I'm sorry to say yes there is. One of those poor guys that have been kidnapped has just died of Malaria after the crew were taken deep into the swamps and the other poor guys are reported to be unwell and may face the same consequences.
Note to anyone thinking about going to Nigeria to work, make sure that the 'armed escort' that you get do not hand you over for £20 or so. In another tread some one asks the question regarding "The cost of life", I'm afraid it is much cheaper in Nigeria than in the UK. (something to bear in mind if you decide to go to work there).

Are you guys man or mouse
Do you know that when your time comes there is no escape and it does not matter where you are.
So, if i needed a job or the cash badly, i would take the risk coz i have done the assessment and it aint that bad.
So now you see who is the man and who is the mouse

Anwar I find it difficult to tell who is a man and who is a mouse from postings on the thread. I spent thirteen years serving in the forces but then I did not have a wife and kids to think about. Would I go now? Probably not.

The report that one of the guys died of malaria appears to be untrue. This was splashed across the front of our local paper on Saturday but then followed up a news story that all 7, including the 4 Britains for freed yesterday.

Your quite right Dee,
One of the lads had a gun held to his head and forced to make a phone call to the wife of another kidnap victim and tell her that he had died of Malaria and that the rest were also unwell. This seems to have paid off for the kidnappers as the ransom was paid and they were set free the very next day.
Would you? - I don't think so!
