Posted By Scottie CMIOSH I had a position to fill that would have been great for a NEBOSH gen cert holder and would have been willing to fund study towards Diploma. It would have suited some-one starting in H&S management. The problem I have is that I didn't have many applicants. Please Moderators, do not remove this, I am not trying to advertise. My point is, why can't I find applicants at the starting level? The salary is right for the level sought and the location, while Scottish, is not bad. I wonder whether IOSH should have a placement service to get people on the first rung of the career ladder? If it wasn't for some-one giving me a chance, I would not be CMIOSH now. I would pay for such a service. What are others thoughts - would you use / pay for such a service?

Posted By Merv Newman Its early sunday morning, still darkish out so I'll try to contribute to this. France has a system, rather like "sandwich" courses. University students must find a "stage" or an employer willing to take them on for about three months, usully to undertake some practical project. Lots of employers are quite willing to do this. We have a girl in the office right now trying to sort out our computer system which as become a bit confused with three (four ?) secretaries over the past ten years. They have to produce a written report at the end of the project and the employer has to sign off on the quality f the work. This experience goes on the CV and is counted as experience. America uses a similar "intern" (unpaid)system. Actually I would tend to ignore the "2 year experience" bit and see how the interview goes. From interview experience it seems that entry level H&S people don't use IOSH or SHP so I am at a loss regarding how to reach them. Where do you watch for vacancies? Posted By Robert Paterson Hi Scottie It is with interest that I read all the postings. On the members forum I along with George Wedgewood was canvassing IOSH get involved and try and look at the prospect of starting a work experience register to allow your self and others looking for work experience candidates to be able to find someone on the IOSH register. This was about 2 years ago and to George's credit he has pushed this with council to the stage that a working party was looking at it. Their report is due this month. I think that if everyone was to subscribe to this idea then maybe IOSH would get the project started, but I fear we may have missed the opportunity if there is to be a free website being launched with this incorporated.
