I had a position to fill that would have been great for a NEBOSH gen cert holder and would have been willing to fund study towards Diploma. It would have suited some-one starting in H&S management. The problem I have is that I didn't have many applicants.
Please Moderators, do not remove this, I am not trying to advertise.
My point is, why can't I find applicants at the starting level? The salary is right for the level sought and the location, while Scottish, is not bad.
I wonder whether IOSH should have a placement service to get people on the first rung of the career ladder? If it wasn't for some-one giving me a chance, I would not be CMIOSH now. I would pay for such a service. What are others thoughts - would you use / pay for such a service?

Well said Scottie
There are many people on this forum who just need that lucky break and I use to be one of those people.
I was one of the lucky ones and managed to find a position, I am trying to help a new starter get on the Health & Safety Ladder as again the person has the knowledge but no experience catch 22?

Its early sunday morning, still darkish out so I'll try to contribute to this.
France has a system, rather like "sandwich" courses. University students must find a "stage" or an employer willing to take them on for about three months, usully to undertake some practical project. Lots of employers are quite willing to do this. We have a girl in the office right now trying to sort out our computer system which as become a bit confused with three (four ?) secretaries over the past ten years.
They have to produce a written report at the end of the project and the employer has to sign off on the quality f the work.
This experience goes on the CV and is counted as experience.
America uses a similar "intern" (unpaid)system.
Actually I would tend to ignore the "2 year experience" bit and see how the interview goes.
I've met some really good students over the years whom I would employ instantly. As well as a few bargepole candidates

Hi Scottie - I am in the position of trying to get my foot on the ladder - very daunting having some certs including NEBOSH and self funding my NVQ4, but no "experience". I am also in Scotland and openings seem hard to come by. Did you use an agency to advertise the post or do you not use them?

Dave, We used the press and a recruitment agency. From interview experience it seems that entry level H&S people don't use IOSH or SHP so I am at a loss regarding how to reach them. Where do you watch for vacancies?
Maybe better to email me direct rather than continue to discuss this on the forum? Regards
Scottie

Merv, I did my degree in Leeds and we were all put with comapnies for practical experience ... I 'helped' Harrogate theatre look at the safety issues there. Hopefully the trustees got something out of it, I certainly did.
As for participating, I for one would be very happy to help people gain practical experience and an ISOH register might be a good way of getting volunteer organisations togehter with students/starters. Good call Scottie.

Hi Scottie
Just as a matter of interest when you say entry level how low a salary are we talking?
If you'd rather not say then can you email direct and let me know?
I tend to find that some employers expect a "new start" in H&S to take on a lot of responsibility for a fairly low salary and thats why you might not be getting a lot of interest in your position.

hi scottie,
if you're ever in the position to offer something like this again i will be very interested, i have completed my certificate, (self funded) and am currently self funding my way through a distance learning diploma course whilst working full time. as for anyone else who's interested in me, i'm cheap!! (ish) just give me that chance to prove what i've always wanted to do.

Hi Scottie
It is with interest that I read all the postings. On the members forum I along with George Wedgewood was canvassing IOSH get involved and try and look at the prospect of starting a work experience register to allow your self and others looking for work experience candidates to be able to find someone on the IOSH register. This was about 2 years ago and to George's credit he has pushed this with council to the stage that a working party was looking at it. Their report is due this month.
I think that if everyone was to subscribe to this idea then maybe IOSH would get the project started, but I fear we may have missed the opportunity if there is to be a free website being launched with this incorporated.
Good luck with the website and if it is supported I am sure it will be a success
Regards
Robert Paterson
