Oh wise ones...
I notice by searching that this has been covered quite a bit in the past but i can't seem to find a direct answer to my question.
What are the maximum capacities (if any) for storage of petrol and diesel, before any specific legislation comes into effect? I've heard 30 ltrs and 200 ltrs banded around.
I know there will be regs concerning RA and safe storage for any quantity but i'm mainly thinking of any quantities at which i need to register the storage with a LA etc.
Your wisdom and guidance, as always, would be much appreciated.

I understand that for HFL's a 30 min fire resisting bin is required for 30-50 litres where the flashpoint is below 32'C. For more details go to HSG 51 - HSE publication.

Guidance is available in HSG51 The storage of flammable liquids in containers. Further reading is available in The Highly Flammable Liquids and Liquefied Petroleum Gasses Regulations 1972 (from HMSO. ISBN 0 11 020917 6).
This should cover your needs.

Matt,
Petroleum licensing etc - you need to find out from your local petroleum licensing officer at your local authority.
As an example, there is some good advice at:
http://www.surreycc.gov....nd+mixtures?opendocument
Note that the Highly Flammable Liquids etc regs '72. are no longer in force, and were in any case irrelevant to the question you posed about licensing.
I have to say that 15 litres of petrol (amount above which a license is required) has always seemed awfully low... I don't know what the figure is for diesel fuel...

I agree with Steve on this - If you store petroleum spirit (petrol) in a tank, which is dispensed in to a motor vehicle's tank then you will almost certainly need a licence to do so. The best bet is to talk to your local licensing officer and ensure you keep them on board.
As Steve also states HFL&LPG are repealed and the authority will want a DSEAR assessment.
