Posted By Roger Bodycote Most of the Regulations made in this country were started as Directives from Europe. Can you tell me which Regulations in the last 10 years were brought to Statute by our Government, without any request from Europe?

Posted By J Knight Hi Roger, What is the point of your post? More pointless EU bashing (its here, we're part of it, get on with it I say) or a genuine desire for information? A quick survey of the statutory instruments enforced by HSE (view them at http://www.cps.org.uk/latestlectures/) should convince you that most of these were not produced following EU directives. A recent set which are not is CDM; both the muddled original and its successor are entirely home grown. John

Posted By Roger Bodycote I am putting together a health and safety awarness course, and wanted to give an example of a Regulation that was not instigated by the EU. Also I wanted the example to be of a more recent date. Thanks for the info about the CDM Regs. Regards Roger.

Posted By J Knight OK, sounds like good reasons for info, sorry if I sounded tetchy but we do get some very trenchant views about the EU expressed here from time to time. I believe that the Prevention of Accidents to Children in Agriculture 1998 was home-grown as well. Part of the problem is that EU and UK law are interactive and intertwined, so the initiative for law can come from the UK but the whole thing then gets expressed as an EU directive, John

Posted By John Murgatroyd Unless it hasn't been noticed, nothing comes from the EU. This country, in spite of the entrenched bigotry, is PART of the EU. The EU is us, and so Germany, France, et-al, are also part of us. The European Working Time Directive, for instance, was enacted as part of this countries H&S legislation. A bit like having a foot in both camps, but not being part of either. Someday soon the various peoples of THIS country are going to have to decide who they are. The WTD, never mind what you think of it, gave people in this country guaranteed holidays with pay, something that the government of the place just couldn't be bothered about.

Posted By ddraigice I seem to recall that CDM is part of an EU directive. Part of the temporary or mobile construction site directive 1992. (TMCS)

Posted By Robert K Lewis Hence all regulations are home grown in response to a directive. Really nothing since around 1990 has been other than EU driven. like the curate's egg it is good in parts and badly drafted by UK drafters in the rest. Bob

Posted By Doug Russell How about the Pressure System Safety Regulations 2000? If memory serves correct these are not a tranposition of an EU Directive but an update to regs that pre-dated the Pressure Equipment Regulations (which do implement a European Directive).

Posted By Tony Brunskill Did you know that a lot of the so called EU Regulations were UK sponsored and proposed?

Posted By Jim Walker Regarding the rants about EEC directives. These days I'm not all that "with it", but in my past was responsible for world wide standards compliance for a well known electrical / electronics manufacturer. Generally speaking the directives made my life much easier, the company products cheaper & safer. My gripe was with how UK transposed into UK law. For example, the Electromagnetic compatibility directive (EMC) was about 3 pages long (if you ignore the stuff common to every directive). The UK papershufflers managed to "improve" on that with a 90 page document! Solution - move manufacturing out of UK to somewhere (Spain & Portugal)that use and test to the 3 pager. Yet another reason why nothing is "Made in UK"
